15 Tips to Help Older Job Seekers Age-Proof Their Resumes
15 Tips to Help Older Job Seekers Age-Proof Their Resumes15 Tips to Help Older Job Seekers Age-Proof Their ResumesHow to Age-Proof Your Resume15 tips to help older job seekers highlight their skills, not their ages.Searching for a new job is challenging, regardless of how old you are. However, if you are 50 or older, you may face some additional hurdles.According to a recent study by AARP, 76 percent of older workers blame age discrimination for their lack of confidence in finding a new job. Their concern is justified. Government data shows that age 55-plus job seekers typically face substantially longer periods of unemployment compared with those job seekers between 20 and 24.If you are concerned about facing bias during the job search, dont panic. There are many things you can do to showcase the skills and experience youve earned during your career. The following tips will help you age-proof your resume to help you stand out from the competition and land the right job.1. Focus on y our recent experienceThe further along you are in your career, the less relevant your earlier work experience becomes. Employers care most about your recent work that matters for the roles theyre filling, not your experience from 15 or mora years ago. As a result, give more detail about the positions youve held in the past 1015 years that are related to your current job search and say less about your earliest jobs.2. Eliminate older datesRemove the dates related to work experience, education, and certifications if they fall outside the 15-year window. While you may want to consolidate older work experience in a separate section or a Career Note, including the dates of employment is unnecessary. Similarly, its important to share your credentials on your resume, but the employer doesnt need to know you earned your MBA 17 years ago.3. Limit your resume to two pagesMost recruiters spend less than 10 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding if the candidate should receive further consi deration. With so little time to make the right impression, its important to streamline your resume to two pages. Focus on using this space to highlight your recent work experience and accomplishments that best match your current career goals.4. Avoid the jack-of-all-trades approachAlthough you may have held numerous roles throughout your career, your resume shouldnt be a laundry list of everything you have done. Focus on tailoring your resumes content to support your current career objective, rather than providing a generalized summary of your entire work history.5. Optimize your resume with keywordsSeventy-five percent of all verbunden applications will never be seen by human eyes thanks to the hiring bots, which are software programs known as an applicant tracking system (ATS). Their job is to collect, scan, and rank an employers inbound applications. To improve your resumes chances of making it past this digital gatekeeper and on to a human for review, make sure your document in cludes the appropriate keywords. If a word or schlagwort repeatedly shows up in the job listings youre interested in, incorporate unterstellung terms into your resume.6. Upgrade your email addressOlder workers sometimes are seen as lacking technical savvy. Dont give employers a reason to believe you might fit this stereotype. Ditch your old AOL or Hotmail email account for a free, professional-looking Gmail address that incorporates your name.7. List your mobile phone numberIf youre still listing your landline on your resume, its time to mobilize your contact information. Only list your cell phone number on your resume so you can control the voicemail message, who answers important phone calls from recruiters, and when.8. Join the LinkedIn bandwagonLinkedIn is a valuable platform for connecting with others in your industry and uncovering new job opportunities. Its also an important place to advertise your candidacy to prospective employers. In fact, a study by recruiting software pr ovider Jobvite found that 93 percent of employers admit to reviewing candidates social network profiles regardless of whether the candidates provided that information. If youve avoided using LinkedIn in the past, nows the time to create a profile that supports your career goals. Then, customize your LinkedIn profile URL and add it to the top of your resume to ensure recruiters find the right profile for you.9. Showcase your technical proficienciesThe fact that you know how to use Microsoft Office is no longer noteworthy (unless your role requires advanced knowledge of Excel). Show employers that youve kept up with the latest tools and platforms related to your field. If youre in a non-technical profession, create a small section toward the bottom of your resume that lists these proficiencies. If you realize theres a skill or tool outside your wheelhouse thats routinely appearing in the job descriptions youre targeting, check out sites such as edX, Coursera, and SkillShare to find fr ee or low-cost online courses.10. Add one space after each sentenceNothing screams over-40 like two spaces after a period. The rule of two spaces after each sentence originated back when we used typewriters for regular communication. A typewriter used monospaced typesetting, where every character on the keyboard is given the same amount of space on the paper. The extra space was needed between sentences to make it easier to see the start of a new sentence. However, with the advent of the digital age, this practice is no longer necessary. In fact, it will flag you as an older and less tech-savvy applicant in the process. Unless you are typing on an actual typewriter, you should place only one space after a period.11. Customize each online applicationSmall tweaks to the content of your resume can make a big difference in determining whether your online application reaches a human being for review. Before you submit another online application, re-evaluate your resume based on the job p osting. Then, make small edits to customize your resume so that it clearly reflects your qualifications for this specific role.12. Ditch the objective statementAvoid using a run-of-the-mill objective statement thats full of fluff and focuses solely on your wants and needs. Instead, replace it with your elevator pitch. In a brief paragraph, known as a professional summary or executive summary, explain what youre great at, most interested in, and how you can provide value to a prospective employer. In other words, summarize your job goals and qualifications for the reader.13. Aim for visual balanceIf content is king in a resume, then design is queen. How your information is formatted is just as important as the information itself. Focus on leveraging a combination of short blurbs and bullet points to make it easy for the reader to quickly scan your resume and find the most important details that support your candidacy.14. Validate your skillsIts not enough to simply state that youre a great manager or possess a high financial acumen. You need to back up these claims by providing a specific example, figure, or case study in your work experience or education section that illustrates how youve used this ability to produce results.15. Focus on achievements, not tasksAt this point in your career, recruiters are less concerned with the tasks youve completed and more interested in learning what youve accomplished. Separate each job under your work history into a short blurb that describes your role and responsibilities. Then, add a set of bullet points to describe the results youve achieved and the major contributions youve made that have benefited the organization. By bulleting these details, youre drawing readers eyes to the information they care most about your qualifications. Whenever possible, quantify your accomplishments to provide additional context for the recruiter.Do you need help age-proofing your resume for the job search? How to Disagree With Your Boss and Thrive
How to Disagree With Your Boss and Thrive How to Disagree With Your Boss and Thrive Itâs not career suicide to disagree with your boss. In fact, confident managers want employees that will disagree with them. Disagreement creates better ideas, solves problems, creates positive relationships, and promotes personal growth and development. That said, disagreeing with your boss is much easier if your organizationâs work culture supports divergent opinions and points of view. In these kinds of organizations, involved, engaged employees are encouraged to offer their opinions and ideas because the organization wants to take advantage of employees talents, skills, and experience. However, lets not forget that bosses are human, too, and have their own particular management style. That management style can range from dictatorial to so hands-off that they are out-of-touch. The important thing is to know your boss and his or her leadership style to properly assess how much disagreement will be appreciated and tolerated. How to Prep for Disagreement How you approach disagreement is critical when you want to disagree with your boss. A respectful, thoughtful approach will always trump an aggressive, demanding approach. Having facts available that support your case is also helpful. Researching the area of disagreement, benchmarking the practices of other companies, and talking with your industry contacts is homework that you should do before approaching your boss. That way, noncompetitive best practices will bring the necessary verification to support your viewpoint. Armed with data, it wont be about what you think versus what your boss thinks. Especially when the decision involves serious business issues that might require disruptive change management strategies, financial commitments, and emotional energy from employees, your opinion needs facts to support it. 10 Key Actions to Take to Prepare for Disagreeing In order to have the most successful outcome for your disagreement discussion with your boss, here are 10 things that employees have done that have provided the best results. Adhering to all or some of these will make disagreeing with your boss easier, safer, and more likely to get you the result youre looking for. They built the relationship first. Thus, when they disagreed, they had a good relationship to start. They had a record of success and made the boss look good. The boss had some faith that their recommendations would work out because of positive experiences in the past. They had a history of practicing personal courage. They could be depended on to speak out for the good of the business. They would disagree when they really thought they were in the right and they werent just disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing. They exhibited a commitment to the overall success of the business, not just to their personal aggrandizement, fiefdoms, or career promotion. They avoided making recommendations that helped one team or department and ignored others, or the whole. They were straightforward and didnât play games. Even if they sought allies to agree with their position, they were upfront about it and therefore could be trusted. They didnât make the boss feel like an idiot. No part of the disagreement was personal in nature, and there was no name-calling, sarcasm, or disparagement. The disagreement came across as a logical approach to the problem and in the best interests of the team. They started the discussion by identifying their areas of agreement. They used the boss as a mentor. No matter how much they disagreed with the boss, he or she still did something right to be in a managerial position. They asked themselves what they could learn from their boss and sought time with their boss to discuss issues and approaches.Their business ethics and relationships were above reproach. They were people the boss could comfortably support and defend. They didnât go around the boss to his or her boss to plead their case. The boss wasnât blindsided by their boss and the reporting employee who disagreed. They were good communicators who could express themselves convincingly with evidence and rationale to support their case. They knew that âI thinkâ or âI feelâ were not enough to affect the critical direction. They needed to present hard data and relevant facts. They were able to demonstrate that they had researched their solution thoroughly, including benchmarking other similar companies in their industry. Use these tips to prepare for the day- and it will come if you are a good employee, the kind of employee that most bosses want- when you want (or need) to disagree with your boss.

Job Search Tips for Payroll Positions
Job Search Tips for Payroll Positions Job Search Tips for Payroll Positions This may be the best time in recent years to be a payroll specialist. As many businesses seek to expand their workforce, hiring managers are eager to find skilled professionals who can keep payroll-related operations running smoothly. But even in a hot employment market, great opportunities wonât just fall into your lap. Youâre not the only payroll specialist looking going after any given job, so you have to make yourself stand out to employers. And the job search tips youâve used in the past may not work if the job isnât advertised in the place you're looking. You already know how to search job boards and dress for interviews, but thereâs more you can do to get noticed and find the best workplace for your payroll career. Here are five job search tips you may not have considered: 1. Use the right keywords Many employers today use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to filter cover letters and resumes. This platform is not only a good way for human resources employees to stay organized; it also saves them time by scanning for specific words and phrases related to the position. For example, if the job requires proficiency in certain software, an employer may run searches for terms like âSAPâ or âADP Workforce.â The key, of course, is to increase the chances that the ATS flags your application as more relevant than most in the haystack and puts it in front of the hiring manager. But how do you know what theyâre seeking? The job posting contains the most clues. Go over the required and preferred qualifications, and jot down what the company wants. That might include payroll certifications, such as the Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), and experience or expertise in the following: Multi-state payroll Benefits systems/benefits deductions/benefits premiums ADP/Paylocity/QuickBooks expertise State regulations/federal regulations HRIS (human resources information system)/HRMS (human resources management system) Comb through the posting to make your list of words to use in a resume and put them in your cover letter, too. 2. Tailor your resume to each job You write a new cover letter for each opening, but you shouldnât stop there when it comes to customizing your application materials. Your resume should not be a one-size-fits-all document. Its purpose is to answer a prospective employer's main question: âWhy should we hire you for this payroll position?â And as no two jobs are alike, your resume should be different for each one. Much like using keywords, you need to carefully analyze the job posting and make sure your application speaks to those criteria. For example, if the company has employees all over the country, your documents should highlight your thorough understanding of the issues related to multi-state and federal payroll, including taxes, withholdings and regulatory compliance. 3. Leverage LinkedIn If you think LinkedIn is just a stuffy version of Facebook, youâre not using it right. When properly leveraged, LinkedIn acts as an extension of your resume - it contains all relevant information, including what you canât fit in a one- or two-page document. Some of these details include photos, videos, presentations, lists of accomplishments and your recent activities with professional groups on LinkedIn. This business-oriented social network also offers another powerful feature: recommendations and endorsements. Your professional contacts can vouch for your many abilities, such as payroll, employee benefits, human resources, accounting, PeopleSoft and HRIS. People youâve worked with can also write endorsements about your technical skills, work ethic, soft skills and so forth. Reach out to former coworkers and supervisors, with a polite reminder of your accomplishments. Also, to help potential employers find your LinkedIn profile, include the link to your profile on your cover letter, resume and business card. 4. Put your best qualities above the fold The concept of âabove the foldâ comes from whatâs visible on the top half of the front page of a traditional newspaper, or what you see when itâs folded in half on the newsstand. The most important stories go there, because thatâs what is designed to catch their eye to make them buy. This same idea applies to your resume, even though itâs being viewed electronically. Move things around so the best stuff is near the top and is immediately in front of the hiring managerâs eyes. Do you bring to the table some of the best personality traits? Are your Excel skills a source of pride? After the ATS flags applications that contain certain keywords, most hiring managers spend only a few seconds scanning the text before deciding whether to keep reading or click on the next candidate. Hook them right away. 5. Go offline, and donât be shy As powerful as LinkedIn and online job boards are, some payroll positions are never even advertised. So how do people find out about those hidden jobs? Talk to your professional network - friends, former colleagues and acquaintances - to let them know youâre in the market for a new payroll job. Attending events like conferences and seminars is also a great way to expand your circle of contacts. And donât be shy about reaching out to your dream employers to let them know about your interest in joining them and what you can bring to their team - even if they donât have any openings posted out in the wild. Rewards of following job search tips A successful job search makes good use of all the tools at your disposal. It also takes time. With just a little extra effort - using both common and uncommon job search tips - you can improve your odds of landing a great new job in the payroll department. What Got You Here Wont Get You That Promotion
What Got You Here Wonât Get You That Promotion What Got You Here Wonât Get You That Promotion 4 steps you can take today to get the skills for the job you want to have.A friend of mine shared with me a piece of advice from his military training - he told me that his superior officers used to tell him: The things that got you promoted this time will never get you promoted again. This is right on the money. Itâs also completely wrong, but weâll get to that later. The genius behind this idea is that you - your career, your personal brand - needs to continually evolve. You need to grow and increase your skills and knowledge base. And, most importantly, you need to show that you have the skills that it takes to succeed at the next level.Itâs also genius because of one of the hidden rules of moving up the career ladder: Excel at the type of work that you want to do next.By excelling at the work that you want to do next, it will ensure that you are developing the skills that will get you promoted, rather than getting stuck, unfairly, at your current level.I know a woman who r eally wanted to move into a leadership role in her organization. She had proven herself an invaluable â#2â - her boss felt comfortable handing over all the details and knew that she would execute effectively and quickly.Unfortunately, even though this woman was a leader in her community and knew she was a leader inside, she didnât practice those skills for the job that she wanted to do. When she approached her boss about extending her responsibilities, he wasnât as receptive as she hoped because he didnât have confidence in her ability to lead strategy.By excelling at her current responsibilities without stretching to the skills required for the next level, she killed her chances at being promoted. Moral of the story: Find ways to step up and demonstrate your ability to do the work that you want to do in the future.Climbing the ladderThis can feel impossible as, generally, one doesnât get opportunities handed to them to do their bosses work. And often we are completely overwhelmed with the task of getting our own job done, let alone taking on additional responsibility.Iâm not going to lie and say that it will be easy or quick, but it is possible to create opportunities that will prove your ability to move up the ladder. Make a List: Take 30 minutes to really think about the work that you want to be doing and exactly what skills and characteristics it would take to be successful at that endeavor. Make a list of the eight items you think are most important. Do Your Homework: Occasionally, you may already have all of the skills or knowledge to excel in a new role already, but nine times out of 10, youâll have to do your homework. Go on informational interviews, take an online course and borrow books from the library. Get your learning on! Brainstorm Some Opportunities: Now it gets interesting. One aspect that primarily comes up for those early in their career is managing other people. Perhaps you could hire and manage an intern or two over the summer, or you could own a small project and manage the team for it. You might also get experience to move into a management role by volunteering. Explore these avenues to gain experience. Put It into Action: Pick one of the ideas above. Think about it from your bossâs perspective and figure out how it benefits them. Then pitch it to them to make it happen - and be sure to highlight the homework youâve done, too. By taking these steps, you not only start showing the skills for the job that you want to have, but you show that you are ambitious, driven and self-motivated (in other words, exactly the kind of person that companies promote). So what are you waiting for? Schedule a 30 minute meeting with yourself this week and get to work.At the start I said that while this idea was genius, it is also totally wrong. What got you here wonât get you promoted again is completely correct when it comes to skills, actions and relationships in general. What will get you promoted again is your personality, characteristics and integrity. So, keep working on self-awareness, understanding and improvement!Reposted with permission from Personal Branding Blog

6 ways to network on social media that you havent thought of yet
6 ways to network on social media that you haven't thought of yet 6 ways to network on social media that you haven't thought of yet Charlene Li once said: âTwitter is not a technology, itâs a conversation â" and itâs happening with or without you.âDoes social media take up a large part of your day? Since I was in college at Penn State, I canât remember a day that I wasnât on social media. As a writer, content creator, influencer, coach, radio personality, and podcaster, social media has played a big role with me sharing my message to the world. With so many people using social media, it is important to find innovative ways to leverage social media for your personal and professional goals. Have you considered these six ways to network on social media?1. Joining a group on Meetup. Are you a part of a Meetup Group? If not, you need to join one. You can not only take advantage of the events hosted by people with similar interests, but you can also message and connect with the other members, set up calls, and create the opportunity for yourself to learn about others you are interested in networking with.2. Joining Facebook Pages, Groups Events. It surprises me that to this day, many people are not fully utilizing Facebook. Whether it is joining a book club, liking a Facebook page, or âattendingâ an events listing, there are so many opportunities to connect with like-minded folks on the largest and most popular social media platform.3. Attending Eventbrite Events. If you are like me, then you love Eventbrite. Literally, I enjoy checking out events on a weekly or monthly basis to stay abreast of what is going on in the world. Not only can you RSVP for these events, but you should take advantage of connecting with the organizers. Their contact information is right there/ Maybe you want to know more about the attendees, or get more involved with the event itself. It is totally possible to put yourself out there on this platform!4. Leveraging LinkedIn Groups Events. If you donât know why LinkedIn is a such an important networking tool, then you have been living under a rock. There are several ways to use the platform in innovative ways, but one of my favorites is leveraging LinkedIn Groups and Events to connect with even more people.5. Connecting with bloggers and their followings. Are there blogs that you love and follow? Have you ever reached out to the blogger to connect and discuss ways to collaborate? Or, have you ever connected with other followers on that blog or the bloggerâs social media platforms? If not, what are you waiting for? Having a mutual passion for someoneâs work is a great way to get a conversation started with someone youâd like to connect with.6. Making Twitter lists. Are you a fan of Twitter? Are you familiar with Twitter lists? Do you have one yourself? If not, I encourage you to take the time to familiarize yourself with them by creating your own and exploring other lists. As you up your twitter game, you will be probably surprised with how easy it is to find new folks in your industry who are following the sam e trends and news stories as you are. 10 Leadership Books All Managers Should Read - The Muse
10 Leadership Books All Managers Should Read - The Muse 10 Leadership Books All Managers Should Read If you do your job, and you do it well, youâll continue to move up the career ladder. And thatâs awesome. But as you make that climb, youâll start to realize that being a manager of one, two, 20, 100 people is hard! And that you need to be more than a boss, you need to be a leader. While there are many resources out there on making this happen- my favorites continue to be books. As CEO of a fast-growing startup, I do my best to always have something on-hand to read- whether itâs that dayâs Wall Street Journal, a book by one of my favorite philosophers, or the latest autobiography of a leader I admire. Iâve always enjoyed expanding my knowledge base and believe that all (aspiring) leaders should set aside time outside of email, meetings, and conference calls to settle in with something thatâll improve their skills. Here are my personal recommendations for the 10 books (in no particular order) everyone should have in his or her personal library: 1. Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less by Barry Schwartz Decision-making is a necessary skill for anyone in charge. This book identifies why less is more and prepares us to find balance and happiness in the choices we make whether business or personal. 2. Take the Lead: Motivate, Inspire, and Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Everyone Around You by Betsy Myers Myers took a leap of faith when she signed on to serve as COO of a grassroots presidential campaign for an up-and-coming Chicago senator (who you know as our 44th president). Take the Lead offers insightful and inspiring advice about taking command and bringing out the best in yourself. 3. Who: The A Method for Hiring by Geoff Smart and Randy Street Assuming people- not strategy- drive organizational success, businesses need to increase their odds of hiring the very best employees. The âWhoâ methodology provides the footprint to increasing the likelihood of hiring top performers from 50% to 90%. 4. The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business by Patrick Lencioni This one is my favorite of Lencioniâs amazing collection of books. Once youâve hired the A players in your organization, youâll need to focus on organizational health and how your company can maximize productivity and align everyone toward the companyâs core objectives. Thatâs where The Advantage comes in. 5. Startup CEO: A Field Guide to Scaling Up Your Business by Matt Blumberg Blumbergâs book is like having a mentor or an advisor on speed dial. This is a must-read book for any first-time leader. Blumbergâs framework for how CEOs should think about their workdays and goals has helped me structure my time and energy more effectively as my organization scales. 6. Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder by Arianna Huffington One of the most influential businesswoman today, Huffington shares advice for wholly changing your life- from sleeping habits, to your addiction to technology, to reframing how you think about success. 7. Collaborative Intelligence: Thinking With People Who Think Differently by Dawna Markova, PhD and Angie McArthur A collaborative workforce is often more creative, engaged and forward-thinking, and the best leaders can engage and work well with a variety of people. McArthur and Markova provide actionable tips to improving collaboration skills, all backed by neuroscience. 8. The Secrets of Happy Families: Improve Your Mornings, Tell Your Family History, Fight Smarter, Go Out and Play, and Much More by Bruce Feiler Hopefully your career is fulfilling, but you still need work-life balance. Itâs easy to take family life and happiness for granted. This book does a great job of sharing useful insights to better connect with your family during your off hours- making turning your email off on the weekends easier than ever. 9. Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen No leader should avoid the tough talks: Itâs part of business. In Difficult Conversations, the authors provide a framework for navigating confrontation from start to finish, showing you how to stay balanced and use productive problem solving skills. 10. Love âEm or Lose âEm: Getting Good People to Stay by Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans Turnover is expensive, and when youâre working on building a company, the last thing you want is for your top employees to leave and have to start at square one again. This book should be part of all managersâ libraries- itâs one you can keep turning back to with valuable insight and actionable engagement strategies. These are some of the books that have proved most helpful to me. Tweet me your favorites! Photo of man reading courtesy of Shutterstock.

Salary Negotiation Tips Torn Between Two (Possible) Offers
Salary Negotiation Tips Torn Between Two (Possible) Offers Salary Negotiation Tips Torn Between Two (Possible) Offers How do I balance an offer in hand with a potentially more interesting one that I am still interviewing for?Q: I was extended an offer and told I must make a decision by end of week, but Iâm supposed to hear back about a role that is more interesting to me the Monday after - what should I do?A: You want to delay Company A and speed up Company B, so do that to the best of your ability. Come up with a reason, such as, âIt looks like we have all the elements down. I canât say yes at the moment for some personal reasons, but I am considering it very carefully. Hereâs what I can promise you: I need three to four days to talk to a couple of people, and when Iâm finished, Iâll come back and Iâll either say, âGreat, letâs go forwardâ or âitâs not the right career move for me at this timeâ. I wonât say yes just to have a job and then in a few months bail on your company. Thatâs why I need to make sure I have the time necessary to commit myself 100% and have no lo oking back over my shoulder or later regrets.âThe point is, why should they wait around for you to wait for something better? You owe it to Company A, who wants to know by Friday, to give them something for the wait. It wouldnât be fair to Company A to accept the job and then have regrets and take another job that comes along, so itâs in their interest and yours to figure out how you can extend the deadline.Next weekâs question: The compensation package the recruiter and I agreed to verbally does not match the actual written contract I received as an offer. How do I address this?

Job Seekers Get More Leverage
Job Seekers Get More Leverage Job Seekers Get More Leverage Itâs still a buyersâ market, but job seekers (the sellers) should be prepared to exercise more leverage in the hiring process.Itâs no fun being a commodity. For much of the last two years it was a buyersâ market for hiring companies - they had their pick of willing and available candidates. The result was a protracted hiring process where the hiring companies (in this case, the buyers) took their time and shopped around for the best candidate, secure in the fact that they had plenty to choose from should one or two receive a better offer in the meantime. It also meant job seekers (the sellers) had less leverage in setting the sale price and other terms. You might have had but one chance to accept an offer before it was rescinded.âIt was employersâ choice out there,â said Kathleen Steffey, president of executive search and recruitment firm Naviga, based in Tampa, Florida. âClients had the upper hand and could take their time making sure they found perfect candidates, w hether that meant keeping candidates âon holdâ for weeks, or asking them to return for more and more interviews.âThatâs changing, she said. Her clients (the buyers) are waking up to the changing reality and job seekers (the seller) should be prepared to exercise more leverage in the hiring process.âIf a clientâs not pulling the trigger on delivering an offer, or theyâre keeping a candidate on hold for too long, that person is now able to jet out of there and find something else,â she said. âTheyâre not as starved for opportunities as they once were.âJob seekers should use this leverage to their advantage, Steffey said. But tread carefully and know where you stand. She recommends that job seekers set limits as to what theyâre willing to compromise on and when; then stick to them. It also helps to inform the recruiter, if one is part of the transaction, about your job prospects and level of interest in the position so they know how to manage the hiring companyâ s expectations and pace. The things that can affect how fast the company will move in making you an offer include: How actively are you looking for a job? Do you have other job offers in your pipeline and how likely are you to accept one? How interested are you in this particular company? Is it your last choice or your first? This vetting process helps Navigaâs recruiters find out if a candidate is willing to give her client a few extra days if it could mean getting an offer, âand that helps us, and helps our clients and candidates, to understand where their interest lies and where best to expend energy.ââIf weâre in the process of presenting candidates, the client may express particular interest in one person. We make sure the client knows if the candidate has a number of other interviews scheduled and that they could very well accept an offer from another company,â she said. As a job seeker, you should be upfront about that information, even if recruiters and/or hiring managers donât specifically ask.By presenting as much information as possible about yourself and your job prospects and other competing offers, clients quickly understand that the market has changed and that âif they donât make their move, they might end up missing out on a great hire.â
